Calendar and holidays
Spain's 2026-27 school calendar by region and what it means for shared care
Published on · Updated on · 9 min read
This guide is about Spain. Separation agreements here talk about ‘half of the Christmas holidays’, but those dates aren’t chosen by either parent: the autonomous region decides them. Here are the 2026-27 dates, so you can see where the halves fall in yours.
How to read the table
- Dates are for pre-school second cycle and primary (generally also secondary), which is what affects families with younger children most. Baccalaureate, vocational training and other courses have their own.
- Christmas and Easter are the days without classes, both ends included. Some regions say “holidays start when classes end on the previous day”; here we give the first day without classes.
- End of classes is the last school day. Summer follows; the school calendar only marks when classes stop.
- Everything comes from each region’s official bulletin or, for Ceuta, the provincial office’s calendar (links at the bottom).
- In Cantabria there’s no holiday block as such: Christmas and Easter are runs of consecutive days without classes, and here we give the whole stretch.

Basque Country and Navarre
In both, each school sets its dates within a framework, so ask your school.
- Navarre. Christmas (23 December to 10 January) and Easter (25 March to 4 April) are the same for everyone. The first day of classes falls between 4 and 8 September and the last between 18 and 22 June.
- Basque Country. Classes can’t start before 7 September or end after 18 June. Christmas includes at least 24 December to 6 January and Easter at least 25 to 29 March.
End of Ramadan in Melilla
It’s a public holiday on 9 or 10 March 2027, depending on the day it’s set.
How the split changes with where you live
With the same “two halves” rule, the result changes:
| Region | Christmas days | Easter days |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid | 15 | 9 |
| Castilla-La Mancha | 17 | 8 |
| Asturias | 19 | 7 |
| Valencian Community | 16 | 12 |
(Counted from the table, both ends included.)
Three practical consequences:
- The Christmas cut-off day isn’t the same. In Madrid the midpoint falls on 30 December. With 19 days, as in Asturias, it falls on 1 January. If your agreement says “30 December”, check it’s still the middle of the period you both want.
- If you move region, or the children go to school in another one, the dates change and the agreement may say nothing. It’s worth talking about early.
- Summer is more alike: what changes is the last day of classes, between 18 and 24 June.
What the table leaves out
- Local holidays. Each town has two a year, and they change which long weekend falls to whom.
- Single days off. Some rules set days without classes for the whole region (Asturias: 30 October, 3 and 4 November, 8 and 9 February, 30 April and 3 May) and others leave days to each school. They can lengthen one parent’s weekend.
- Other stages. If you have children in the first cycle of pre-school, secondary, baccalaureate or vocational training, their dates may differ.
What the law says
The Spanish Civil Code doesn’t mention school calendars: it asks the divorce agreement to cover care of the children and contact (art. 90.1) and regulates stays with the parent who doesn’t live with them (art. 94). What applies to you is your agreement or court order. This guide is general information and doesn’t replace a lawyer.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the official school calendar of my region?
In your region's official bulletin (BOCM, BOPA, DOGC and so on) and on the website of its education department. Each year it's approved by an order or resolution that sets the first day, Christmas, Easter and the last day of classes.
Are school holidays the same as the holidays in my agreement?
Not necessarily. Your agreement may say 'Christmas' or 'Easter' without dates, and then the school break in your region is usually used. If it gives specific dates, those apply. If in doubt, write it down together.
Do local holidays and free-choice days appear in the table?
No. Each town or school sets them, and they change which long weekend falls to whom. Check your school's calendar and your town hall's.
